To the west of Ellis Island, stood the once Proud and Sovereign. But Liberty faced the Atlantic. She granted asylum to all who came. Into her harbor, she sheltered the poor, the huddled masses. Her back she turned to the 'savage.'

To the criminal, she offered freedom. To the religious discontent, she allowed intolerance. To the forgotten surplus, Liberty granted Pride, Righteousness, and Manifest Destiny.

From their worship, Liberty raised an army of Faithful. With her head high and back to the cries of a virgin land, Liberty sent forth her minions westward, offering beads and peace and musket balls.
